East Kent Hospitals Trust pays compensation

The High Court in London has ruled that the East Kent Hospitals University NHS Foundation Trust is liable for extremely serious life-changing injuries, sustained by a baby girl during her birth. Damages were awarded for clinical negligence worth £4 million.

According to reports, the baby girl, who is now five years old, sustained brain damage during her delivery at the William Harvey Hospital, in Ashford, Kent during April 2007. Her injuries were caused by the negligence of professionals at the hospital, in failing to arrange a caesarean section fast enough. It resulted in the child being paralyzed and becoming a sufferer from cerebral palsy.

The Court ordered payment of one sum of £1.6 million, followed by annual installments of £185,000, increasing to £270,000 on the child turning nine.
