Cabinet Manufacturing Company Fined Over Worker’s Injury

A cabinet manufacturer has been prosecuted by the Health and Safety Executive after a maintenance engineer sustained severe injuries to his fingers.

On 30 April 2013, Plymouth Magistrates Court heard that the 41 year old was trying to clean machinery at the Rittal CSM plant when his fingers became caught.  He lost the tips of both of the fingers as a result of the incident which had taken place on 1 May 2012.  The surgeons have not been able to reattach them.

The court was told that Darren Robins was clearing paint which was clogging the machinery at the time of the incident.  The factory where he was working manufactures metal cabinets for use in offices.

An investigation carried out by the HSE revealed that the company had not carried out any risk assessment regarding the maintenance procedures.  The HSE did not find a suitable way that the company had to isolate machinery when maintenance work was in place.

Rittal CSM was fined £10,000 in addition to £5,478 in costs.
