Holidaymakers involved in fatal crash in Caithness

23/09/11: Two cyclists on holiday have been involved in a RTA on the A99 in Scotland.

The accident resulted in one of the cyclists being killed and the other sustained serious injuries.

The deceased has been named as Mrs Elaine Dunne from Leicester and she was cycling near Auckengill, near John O’Groats with her husband Chris. It was a return trip to the West Highland Way, the place where the couple had got engaged several years ago.

The incident which involved the two cyclists and a car happened on Wednesday 21/09/11.

Mr Dunne was taken originally to Caithness General Hospital and was then transferred to Glasgow where his condition was said to be serious.

Paula Hodkin, Mrs Dunne’s sister, spoke of the family’s shock and told reporters that Elaine was “the best sister you could ever have” and described how the couple loved to travel.

A Northern Constabulary spokesman advised that the incident had been reported to Scotland’s Procurator Fiscal and enquiries were continuing into the cause of the accident.
