Fine for Belinda’s Bakery

30/11/11: A baker has been fined following one of their worker’s sustaining crush injuries.

The HSE prosecuted Peter Ellis who was working at Belinda’s Bakery as a result of the accident which happened in November 2010 to a teenage colleague.

Southampton court was told that the operative who has requested anonymity was working at a dough machine which has 2 rollers to push the dough through the machine and to mould it into the right size and shape. The worker put his hand between the rollers; he sustained skin and crush injuries to his fingers as well as cuts and bruising.

A HSE investigation revealed that the protective guards had been removed from the machine approximately 2 years earlier, however immediately after the accident, Mr. Ellis reinstalled the guarding.

Speaking after the hearing a HSE spokesperson commented that the risks from these machines are common knowledge in the baking industry and this accident could so easily have ended in far more serious injuries.

Had the correct guarding been in position, the teenager wouldn’t have been able to access the dangerous elements of the machine and this hearing would never had needed to happen.

Mr. Ellis was fined £500.00 and received a cost order for £300.00 after pleading guilty to breaches of H&S legislation.
