Furniture Company Fined Over Injury To Worker

A furniture company based in Nuneaton has been fined for serious safety failings after a worker sustained injuries to his arm.

The incident took place in February 2012 when the arm of the employee was drawn towards a gluing machine.

The employee sustained multiple fractures to his arm as a result of the incident.

Leicester Magistrates Court was told that the worker had been carrying out work on a line where furniture is sprayed with glue.

An investigation carried out by the Health and Safety Executive revealed that the size of the paper roll which is used to collect the overspray glue had been increased by the company.  However, the company did not assess the risks associated with the change.  In addition, it also did not provide training to the workers on how to change new rolls using the new method.

Since the workers were not provided any training, they devised their own method to change the paper rolls.  The method being used was unsafe.

The incident took place when the untrained worker was trying to change a roll.  His arm became drawn towards the machine and he sustained severe injuries including three fractures to his arm.  He was freed by firefighters about 40 minutes later.

The court was told that the employee was traumatised as a result of the incident and although he tried to return to work, he could not stay.

Hammonds Furniture Ltd was ordered to pay a fine of £7,000 in addition to £2,695 in costs.
