Delay in planned abolition of Legal Aid

08/12/11: The Justice Secretary has announced changes to the legal aid system are to be delayed by 6 months after the Ministry of Justice admitted it had not set aside enough time to implement such sweeping changes.

The sweeping changes will include withdrawing the financial assistance from cases of medical negligence, debt, immigration, welfare benefit and family breakdown in addition to some education and housing issues.

The proposals which have been introduced in order to reduce spending by £350m have already sparked a storm of angry protests. Opponents to the proposals include members of the legal profession and the Government is being accused of imposing penalties onto the most vulnerable groups of people in our society.

The controversial measures were original scheduled to be introduced in October 2012; however Kenneth Clarke has now announced that following several unforeseen delays, they will not be introduced until April 2013.
