Increase in reported dog bite incidents

21/09/11: There has been an increase in the amount of people admitted to hospital for dog bites in recent months, a Nursing Times article has claimed.

Statistics published reveal that 1/6 admissions are children under ten years of age. The NHS Information Centre’s statistics state that around 1,000 of the 6,120 admissions for dog bites were children, many of whom were injured by animals they were familiar with.

The figure has been steadily rising for the past two years, with this year’s statistics increasing a total of 5%. The number has increased during the summer, especially in the North West, where the number of hospital admissions was higher.

The issue of dog-related injuries has been highlighted by CAPT in recent years, offering advice to families with pets and children.
