Compensation for Essex schoolgirl in medical negligence case

24/10/11: A schoolgirl from Essex has received a huge package of compensation following medical treatment that went wrong.

The girl, who is believed to be under 10 years of age and is to remain anonymous due to legal reasons, suffered massive injuries after she was admitted to hospital when she was a baby and suffered from a virulent infection.

The NHS Trust involved has admitted liability and offered unreserved apologies to both the girl and the family for the treatment she received which it admitted was negligent.

The High Court has approved a compensation package which includes a £5m lump sum and annual payments which are index linked and will continue to rise. The award is to compensate for the pain and suffering already experienced as well to pay for the care she will require in the future.

The court heard how the child is an independent and determined character who works very hard and with support and care will have a fulfilled and long life.

It is thought that the little girl’s legal fees are also to be paid by the NHS Trust.
