02/09/11: Serving soldier, Fusilier James Candlish has been killed in a road accident. Mr Candlish was the passenger of a black Vauxhall Corsa that was involved in a head-on crash near Penicuik on Friday 19/08/11.

The accident happened at 11:45 pm on the A701 when the car collided with another vehicle about 500 metres south of the Gowkley Moss roundabout. The 20 year old from Hamilton was pronounced dead at the scene by emergency service workers.

The driver, who hasn’t been named, is a colleague of Mr Candlish and is in a critical condition at Edinburgh Royal Infirmary.

The two soldiers had been working as part of the behind the scenes support team at the Edinburgh Royal Tattoo, which also provides the Guard of Honour at the event. After their duties, they returned to the barracks and were on their way out when the accident happened.

In a statement, an army spokeswoman, called the accident a tragedy that had touched all the soldier’s colleagues at 2 Scots and the whole of the army in Scotland and that the army was providing the family of the Fusilier all the support they need.

The other car involved in the accident was a silver Mitsubishi L200 Warrior. The occupants were taken to hospital but were released after treatment.
