Kidney recipient contracted cancer

A female recipient of a donor kidney is considering lodging a claim for medical negligence after contracting cancer.
Mrs. Gillian Smart underwent the transplant operation in 2010 at the Royal Liverpool Hospital. Her own kidney had failed due to the diabetes Mrs. Smart had suffered from for 30 years.

Five days after receiving the kidney, Mrs. Smart was informed she had contracted Intravascular B Cell Lymphoma – a rare form of cancer. The doctors told Mrs Smart the kidney donor had also been infected with the disease.

The NHS apologised for the situation having described the problem as “human error”. The Chief Executive of NHS Blood and Transplant Service, Lynda Hamlyn stated she understood how traumatic an experience it is for all involved and that lessons have been learned following extensive investigations.
