Minor injuries in Carlisle street crash

15/09/11: At approximately 2:30 pm on 01 September 2011, a collision between a Ford Escort and Renault Espace resulted with the Escort ploughing through safety barriers around an excavation to repair a gas leak.

The incident happened in Carlisle on Blackwell Road near to the junction of Jubilee Road and Ridley Road.

Just moments before the crash, two engineers from Northern Gas Networks had been working on the suspected leak including digging the hole and setting up the barriers.

Emergency services were called and the fire service dispatched a crew from Rickergate station. Police closed the Ridley Road junction until about 4:00 pm to allow the fire service to make the cars safe before removal and confirmed a small gas leak was found and made safe. Paramedics treated the car’s occupants for minor injuries. The 19-year-old driver of the escort sustained a minor leg injury.

A Northern Gas Networks spokesperson said none of their engineers had been seriously hurt though one had been sent home suffering from shock. The small gas leak they had been working on was no worse following the incident.
