Teenager seriously injured in RTA

16/12/11: A Cumbrian teenager’s parents are keeping vigil after he has been left fighting for his life after a horrific smash near Longtown.

Tom Khan was with four friends when the car they were travelling in smashed into trees and a bridge before sliding down a ravine.

Another passenger has been moved from hospital in Carlisle to another in Newcastle and another one due to be transferred soon.

The accident happened just after 1am and Tom was a rear seat passenger at the time. He sustained serious injuries and was immediately transferred to hospital in Newcastle where he remains and is said to be ‘very poorly’.

All three emergency services attended the accident and ladders and ropes were required to reach the trapped passengers; cutting equipment was needed to remove the car roof.

The 5 people are all from the Smithfield and Longtown areas.

The only female passenger has subsequently been released from hospital and the 20 year old driver who was not seriously hurt has been interviewed by police investigators.

A police spokesperson from north Cumbria has said the vehicle had not negotiated a left-hand bend correctly which had resulted in it hitting the trees and bridge before plunging a bank into the river.

The investigation is ongoing and police appealed for information from anybody who may have witnessed the incident.
