Fine for The Stone Company UK Ltd

Martin Rice aged 57, was unloading a batch of eleven stone slabs, weighing about three tonnes. As they were being lowered, the bundle fell, crushing him against a wall of a building. Mr. Rice died at the scene of the accident from the injuries he sustained.

The accident occurred on 28th April 2009, at Sandford Mill Lane, Great Baddow, near Chelmsford.

Following an investigation by the authorities, an Essex granite manufacturer was prosecuted and appeared in the Chelmsford Crown Court on the 3rd July 2012.
A plea of guilty was entered by The Stone Company UK Ltd, of Manor Farm, Sanford Mill Lane, Great Baddow, to breaching section 2(1) of the Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974. A fine was imposed of £20,000 with an order to pay costs of £40,000.
